Travelling in Colombia
From all the places in the world, travelling in Colombia became my unexpected haven. It all began in the autumn of 2022, during a work trip that took me from Pride Amsterdam to a conference in Guadalajara, Mexico. Standing halfway across the world, I made a life-changing decision—to stay longer, to explore, and to let my instincts guide me.
But the question lingered: where to go? Something about travelling in Colombia kept pulling me in. It wasn’t just the promise of adventure—deserts, jungles, mountains, and the breathtaking Caribbean and Atlantic coasts. It was also the stories I’d heard about the people: warm, open-hearted, and full of life.
Bogotá: A Bold Beginning
I found myself in Bogotá, standing alone in the sprawling capital. My childhood friend Max was stationed there, and while I had a place to stay, he was in New York City at the time. Alone in a city that many had warned me against, I hesitated. Should I step outside? Was it safe to bring my phone? Or would it be better to stay in the apartment?
The warnings of danger and insecurity weighed on me. But stepping outside, I quickly realised the truth—travelling in Colombia was nothing like its outdated reputation. From the bustling streets of Bogotá to the tranquillity of its smaller towns, I never once felt unsafe. The warmth of the people I met melted away any lingering fears.
The Tayrona Jungle: A World Untouched
One of my most unforgettable experiences was in Tyrona National Park. While floating down a river in an inflatable ring, surrounded by the deep green of the jungle, I was immersed in nature’s purest sounds—monkeys calling, exotic birds singing. For hours, I gradually drifted away from my group, enjoying the solitude and connecting deeply with the wilderness. Overall, it was a serene, unspoiled, and utterly magical experience.
Meeting Sebastian: The Beginning of a New Chapter
My journey through Colombia wasn’t just about discovering landscapes; it was also where I met Sebastian. Our first meeting in an Airbnb in Bogotá’s Financial District was the start of something special. From museum visits to incredible meals at places like Yabana, every day of those first ten days together was filled with adventure.
Since that December in 2022, not a day has passed without us staying connected. And now, this winter, two years later, we’re preparing for something we’ve never done before—travelling through Colombia together.
